the Kennedys

I finally got to use my barnes and nobles gift card and went looking for books. I found a wonderful book of quotes by the Kennedy brothers. Only thing is, I really don't care what Ted Kennedy had to say. So I skipped over his words and finished it up today.

So what were some of the things you did like? And why didn't you like Ted?

I loved reading the words of Robert Kennedy the most. His quotes are generally more lengthy than his brothers, but convey to the world what his heart held within. You can see his love of country, of family, and of the church. He was one of my childhood models. I remember getting to meet him and being awestruck. He was so genuine, even as an eight year old child I could tell how real he was a human being. He was one of those people that believed that you need to speak up when you see wrong. One of my favorite quotes of his, "If I hadn't been born rich, I'd probably be a revolutionary."

I read some of Teddy's quotes, but I have never really had much respect for Teddy because of the questionable circumstances on Chappaquiddick (sp?). I believe he devoted his life to public service and fought for the good for many years, but his words don't have the same impact on me. I think Bobby Kennedy lived his words.

I'm kind of stumped what he meant by the revolutionary comment. Did money keep him from being one, or did he not need to be because he was rich?

I think his comment meant that because he was born rich, and could enter the political arena like he did, he was able to make change. He shut down the mafia. He ordered the national guard to protect the children going to the schools in the south. He didn't just talk about what is right, he took action. If he hadn't been born rich, I doubt he would have been able to make much impact. If his brother wasn't a "Kennedy" with money and influence, I doubt he would have become president. I don't think we have had a "poor" president in the last 100 years.

I thought some more about it, and I get it now. I was reading the quote wrong. ;)
